Past
Mega Empires has its roots in the classic board game Civilization (1980) designed by Francis Tresham and its expansion Advanced Civilization (1991) designed by a team at The Avalon Hill Game co. This game introduced the concept of a ‘tech tree’ and of players guiding civilizations through their development over various stages of human history, from the Stone Age to the Late Iron Age. Over the years, it became a classic game with a dedicated fanbase worldwide.

Fast forward to 2015—designers Flo de Haan, Gerart de Haan, and John Rodriguez expanded upon these foundations and, supported by game publisher Michael Bruinsma, created Mega Civilization. This monumental game was delivered in a wooden box, weighed 20 pounds, and accommodated up to 18 players.

Building on its success, the team set out to make the experience more accessible. They split the massive game into two standalone versions: Western Empires (2019) and Eastern Empires (2021). Each supported 5-9 players but could be combined for the full 18-player experience. The introduction of the Market Board in Eastern Empires even made it possible for smaller groups (3-4 players) to enjoy the game.

Present
In 2024, designers Flo de Haan and Gerart de Haan founded Colossus Games and teamed up with Ares Games to continue expanding the series. Their first step? Reissuing the existing games under a new brand—Mega Empires: The West and Mega Empires: The East—along with exciting expansion products.

But that was just the beginning. Shortly after the relaunch, Colossus Games announced a brand-new addition to the series: Mega Empires: The Far East. Development and playtesting are already in full swing!

Future
Coming in late 2025, Mega Empires: The Far East will explore historic peoples and dynasties from East and Southeast Asia. With a brand-new map, fresh civilization advances, unique calamities, and innovative mechanics, this game is designed for 3-5 players per box, with a strong focus on smaller player groups while appealing to a broader audience.
However, the growing base of aficionados doesn’t need to worry… Like its predecessors, it can be combined into a larger experience—this time, allowing up to 10 players.
And the vision doesn’t stop there… The ultimate goal? A massive expansion that connects all Mega Empires titles into a single, epic game for up to 30 players!
Stay tuned as the Mega Empires saga continues!
